Midnight Chase in a Pearson Airport Taxi Van
Except for the gentle hum of the motor, the rest of the drive to my accommodation was quiet. Exhaustion followed as the adrenaline started to wear off. I exhaled nervously when we eventually arrived at The Fairmont Royal York.

The Surprise Visit
When my plane eventually landed at Toronto Pearson International Airport, it was far after midnight. I just wanted a comfortable ride to my hotel because I was exhausted from a long trip. I rolled my suitcase behind me and headed to the taxi stand, hearing that the Pearson Airport taxi vans were the most dependable alternative.
The terminal was almost empty, and the air was clear. Like me, a few travelers were lined up, their faces marked with weariness. A large driver with a heavy accent gestured me over as I got to the front. "Where to?" he questioned sternly.
I replied and tossed my stuff in the back. "Downtown Toronto, The Fairmont Royal York," I said.
I took a seat and hoped for a peaceful journey. I had no idea that I was about to be involved in a nocturnal pursuit that would transform my straightforward trip into a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
An Enigmatical Seeker
The taxi van glided into the highway after leaving Pearson Airport. In the distance, the city lights glistened. With a sigh of relief, I prepared to fall asleep in the backseat.
However, something didn't feel right. The motorist continued to look anxiously into the rearview mirror. His agitated fingers beat across the driving wheel.
"Everything okay?" I sat up a little and asked.
He paused before responding. Yes, a bit out of the ordinary. Ever since we departed the airport, that black SUV has been following me.
I looked in that direction. As expected, we were followed steadily by a sleek black SUV. At first, it wasn't close enough to raise suspicions. However, the SUV followed us as we turned into the 401 expressway, never passing us or slipping behind.
The driver shook his head and murmured something in his mother tongue. He responded, "Maybe just coincidence," but his tone seemed unconvinced.
The Chase Starts
It was ten minutes, then twenty. The SUV remained.
The driver gripped the wheel more firmly. "I don’t like this," he whispered. "I’ve seen things before, but this… this feels wrong."
My heart began to race. "What do we do?"
Through the mirror, the driver gave me a quick look. "Hold on."
His tires screeched as he abruptly swerved onto an exit ramp. The abrupt turn shoved me into the door, and my heart jumped into my throat. The taxi van weaved through dark alleys as it rushed through a peaceful industrial region.
To check if the SUV had followed, I strained my neck. It had.
"They’re still behind us!" I let out a gasp.
The chauffeur muttered a curse. "They're looking for something. or someone.
Quick Escape
My thoughts were racing. Who were they? They were following us, but why?
The driver cut through a red light and made another quick curve. The SUV did a flawless imitation of our movements. There was no coincidence here.
"Buckle up," said the driver. "This is gonna get rough."
He pushed the accelerator to the floor, and the taxi van at Pearson Airport lurched forward. We raced along a small street, past shuttered storefronts and quiet warehouses. My chest was thumping with my heart.
Then—far away, blue lights flashed. A police checkpoint.
I felt a mixture of relief and fear. The SUV would undoubtedly back off if we stopped, but what if this was something more serious? For driving carelessly, would the motorist face consequences?
"Do we stop?" My voice trembled as I asked.
After a brief moment of hesitation, the driver shook his head. "No option. We leave.
The Last Conflict
He narrowly avoided the police roadblock by swerving onto a side roadway. The SUV followed suit.
The hunt ended almost as abruptly as it had begun.
The SUV braked hard and came to a stop. Holding a phone to his ear, a man wearing a dark suit emerged. Our taxi van's driver didn't reduce speed. Rather, he continued to push until we were a few blocks away.
He finally pulled into a brightly illuminated gas station and let out a long, deep breath.
"What just happened?" With my seatbelt still fastened, I asked.
He shook his head as he glanced at me. I'm not sure, but I wasn't going to hold out to find out. Perhaps they thought I was someone else. Perhaps it was more. However, since you were in my taxi, I had to protect you."
I took a deep breath. "Well, thanks for that."
He gave a dry laugh. "Next time, maybe take an Uber."
The End of the Journey
Except for the gentle hum of the motor, the rest of the drive to my accommodation was quiet. Exhaustion followed as the adrenaline started to wear off. I exhaled nervously when we eventually arrived at The Fairmont Royal York.
With a fat tip to the driver, I got out, my legs a little wobbly. I couldn't get rid of the impression that I had just experienced something from a movie as I watched the taxi van go away into the darkness.
My travel itinerary didn't exactly include midnight chases, but anything might happen in Toronto. And I would absolutely choose a taxi more carefully the next time.
