Google reveals massive list of fixes and new features coming to the Google Health app

Google has officially rolled out the redesigned Google Health app to all users on both Android and iOS platforms. Alongside this wide release, the renamed Google Health Coach is now available for Google Health Premium members, moving beyond its preview phase. The company has also made Google Fitbit Air available for purchase. To maintain the momentum of the public preview program, Google has shared an extensive list of upcoming fixes and improvements that will roll out starting this week and continue through the summer.

The announcement places significant emphasis on exercise tracking and health data accuracy. Google is addressing a bug where some runs were incorrectly labeled as general workouts. This fix is rolling out this week. Additionally, run splits are being added to workout summaries, and map loading times in exercise summaries are being improved. The company is also tackling incomplete TCX exports for exercises tracked using Fitbit Air and connected GPS, as well as for exercises tracked using multiple devices or apps connected to Google Health. Previously, a bug caused overlapping workout data from multiple sources to fail to separate properly, leading to incomplete or incorrect exports.

Exercise Tracking Enhancements

Beyond bug fixes, Google is improving how the app responds during live tracking of a Fitbit Air exercise in the event of lost connectivity. Metric inconsistencies when tracking exercises with multiple devices connected to the app are also being addressed. The number of exercises that Fitbit Air automatically detects will continue to improve.

Nutrition and Calorie Tracking Fixes

In the nutrition and calorie tracking area, Google is preventing log duplication when the same third-party app is connected via both Health Connect and Google Health directly. Logs from apps like MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, and LoseIt will now have appropriate meal types instead of being categorized as “Other.” Over-reporting of energy burned for Pixel Watch users is being fixed so that energy burned is counted correctly. On the improvement side, users will soon be able to create, view, and log custom foods. Goal-setting and progress tracking are being enhanced, and more deletion capabilities will allow granular management of logs. Additionally, the name of the third-party source will now appear in detailed food log views, not just summary views.

Daily Activity and Sleep Improvements

For daily activity, charts for hourly step goals are being added both in the Today and Health tabs. Sleep tracking is receiving several updates: missing Sleep Scores in parts of the app are being fixed, a 24-hour total sleep view will be introduced to combine main sleep and naps, and naps will be made easier to find for current and previous days. The Restlessness bar is being updated to appear closer to the Awake bar, with improved detection of minor awake moments. Deletion options for sleep sessions are also being added.

Google Health Coach Upgrades

The Google Health Coach experience is evolving with more concise messages in the Today tab, including more visuals like charts, maps, and glanceable stats. The coach will be tuned to comment less on brief walks. Ask Coach will now ask for user intent more frequently before responding, reduce references to less timely information, and have better recall of guiding instructions such as “Stop mentioning…” or “Forget that I…”. Error outs and unnecessary non-answers will be reduced. Support for deleting logs and logging core body temperature via Ask Coach is being added, and food items logged via Ask Coach will include fat type, sodium, and fiber measurements.

Fitness Plans and Metric Views

Fitness plans are being updated based on user feedback. The current flexible weekly targets don't suit everyone, so Google has confirmed that bringing back weekly structured schedules later this year is on the roadmap. The quality, discoverability, and execution of coach-generated workouts will also be improved. Metric views are receiving fixes for data staleness and inconsistency between tiles and fuller metric views. Customization of the Today and Health dashboards will become easier, allowing users to re-arrange, add, or remove metrics.

Sharing Your Data

Data sharing capabilities are being expanded. A bug causing app crashes when accessing friends and family via settings is being fixed. Support for sharing data back to Apple Health is being added, along with enabling sharing of medical records with Smart Health Links. Users will also be able to use tools like command line interfaces and other AI skills on top of their data.

Account Migration Support

For account migration, Google acknowledges that heads of families cannot migrate their personal account without also migrating or deleting kids' accounts, which currently makes it difficult to delete a child account if migration is not desired. In June, users will be able to delete child accounts, unblocking their own account migration.

This comprehensive list of fixes and improvements demonstrates Google's commitment to refining the Google Health app based on user feedback. With updates spanning exercise tracking, nutrition, sleep, coach interactions, fitness plans, dashboard customization, data sharing, and account management, users can expect a more polished and feature-rich experience in the weeks and months ahead. The rollout begins immediately and will continue on an ongoing basis into the summer.
