Iran threatens ‘Stargate’ AI data centers

Iran has escalated its rhetoric against the United States, threatening further attacks on AI data centers in the Middle East, particularly the Stargate initiative. This warning comes as a direct response to ongoing air strikes and threats from the U.S. military, which Iran perceives as a threat to its civilian infrastructure.

In a video statement released by Iranian military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaghari, the country warned that if the U.S. proceeds with its threats to target Iranian civilian facilities, it would retaliate with strikes against U.S. energy and tech infrastructures in the region. This warning signifies a notable increase in the tension between the two nations, especially following U.S. President Trump's comments regarding potential military action against Iran's key infrastructure.

The video showcased an image of a globe, zooming in on the Stargate data center based in the United Arab Emirates, accompanied by a message stating, "nothing stays hidden to our sight, though hidden by Google." This statement underscores Iran's determination to monitor and react to perceived threats from foreign powers.

Stargate is a significant $500 billion joint venture involving OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, aimed at constructing advanced AI data centers. Announced in January 2025, the initiative faced initial hurdles, including funding challenges and costs resulting from tariffs. Nevertheless, it has been striving to expand its presence internationally.

This latest threat from Iran follows U.S. President Trump's assertion that if Iran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz—an essential global shipping route that has been a focal point of contention since the onset of the recent conflict in February—he would order strikes on Iranian civilian infrastructure by the end of a specified deadline.

Recent military actions have already seen several data centers in the region targeted. Notably, Iranian missiles have struck Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers located in Bahrain as well as an Oracle data center in Dubai. Furthermore, Iran has explicitly threatened technology companies, including Nvidia and Apple, warning of potential consequences if such companies are perceived to align with U.S. interests.

The situation remains fluid, with both sides engaged in a high-stakes game of threats and counter-threats that could have significant implications for international relations, especially concerning the burgeoning AI sector and its infrastructure. As the threat of military action looms, the potential for further escalation in the region increases, raising alarms among international observers and stakeholders.
